Subject: Salukis List
Greetings,
Please advise where I can request addition to that list about Salukis. My
wife is crazy about them. If I return to Saudi Arabia this fall, I may be
able to meet some breeders of those fine dogs who live around Riyadh (and
northward).
E-mail to < mutarjm@aol.com >.
Thanks.
Regards,
Steve Franke

Sorry for taking so long to answer.
The Saluki list has changed address. I hope the following is the right one:
To sign on: write to <listserv@apple.lsoft.com>
write: subscribe Saluki-L
To send mail to the list: Saluki-L@apple.lsof.com
This is one list for Salukis where you have a very general public: Both the western show dog type and those who favor the Arabic traditional Saluki.
IMO, and many others, the western Saluki has been bred to favor the show judges (long hair, longer than tall dog) instead of preserving a dog type that has been brough to us by 6000 years of breeding by beduoins and nomads and has a very special character.
It is a hunting dog, also called the Gazelle dog in Saudi. Today the prey is hares as Gazelle hunting is banned in all Gulf states. It hunts togeter with the falcon. The Saluki is very gentle, especially to children. It does not "smell dog" and is accepted to stay inside the tents with the Saudi bedus.
In Oman the Saluki is next to extinguished due to the banning of hunting in the seventies. It is being reintroduced by some "western" expatriates and Mr. Saad Bahwan. My own Laaiq (grandgrand.....mother from King Feisal of Saudi) has fathered 7 lovely Salukis running around in Muscat. Laaiqs niece recently won the Amrican AFC championships in America.
Ther might be good Saluki breeders around Riyadh, but one of the best known ones is the Al Murra tribe living South East. Very difficult to find in wintertime as they move around. During the hot summer they usually stay at one place.
Anyone on the list that knows where to find other Salukis in Oman?
