You'll get a deluge of responses I guess, but basically Gulf friends
say the traditional (i.e.orthdox religious view was that it was
better to be a student than a sports-person, buit with the huge
fortunes to be made in football particularly in Arab countries in
the Gulf young guys probably don't really feel like that any more. I
guess you know they are all football-crazy. Just as their
educational achievement is generally VERY low (one suspects because
of the governmental structures that support the status quo rather
than fostering improvement and development) I wonder if sports
coaching also lacks modern ideas. With the amount of African
ancestry it is odd to me too that better athletes at least have not
been produced. Mind you the climate is very enervating and even
purebred Arabian stallions (which are generally ridden throughout
the region) are not the fiery dangerous creatures they are in the
rest of the world. Perhaps the climate has some effect on the
vitality of the blood in the Gulf region.
