James (later Jan) Morris' "Sultan in Oman" original
1957 Faber & Faber edition has one coloured frontispiece
and 23 b/w photographs (none of the depicting Qara
tribesmen, though). The simultaneously published
American edition (New York, NY: Pantheon Books, 1957)
has only 8 of these photographs. The German edition
(Muenchen: Sueddeutscher Verlag, 1957) has some more
photos than the Faber edition, but also non of the Jibbalis.
The reprints by Century Publishing (London 1983, again repr.
1986) and by Arrow Books (London 1990) not only lack the
original photographs but are also --abridged-- versions (can
anyone tell me why ???).
BTW, James Morris' "The market of Seleukia" (1957) also has a
chapter on Dhofar (chapt. 23, pp. 213-220).
Photographs of Jibbali tribesmen can be found in various
publications on Oman. The most recent example is an
article "The Jibalis of southern Oman [ sic! how can one
call Dhofar 'southern Oman' ?? ]: Arabia's wildest tribe" by
Frank Gardner in the monthly magazine "The Middle East",
No. 274 (January 1998), pp. 38-39, with two col. photos.
