Thanks for your full response, especially concerning the 
Qara/?Jibbali tribespeople.
What is the current view on their origins/culture etc, and are they 
still a distinct group in today's Oman?
I'd love to see some photos of them, but little chance while I'm 
here in isolated New Zealand (probably about as isolated from the 
Middle East as they were at the time of Jan Morris' trip!).
