Oman Fiber Optic Company General Manager Mahammed Hassan al-Atheeb told Reuters the company had already exported nearly 1,000 kilometers of cables throughout the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent since it started production in December 1998. Earlier this year, the company bagged a $3.3 million contract to supply Marconi Communications for a project building a data communication link for the Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) -- Oman's sole provider of telecommunications services. "We have similar cable supply agreements being drawn up in the networking segment, which are expected to translate to business of $3 million per year under a single contract," Al-Atheeb said. --- Oman Studies Centre http://www.oman.org From hkj@lie-net.li Fri, 8 Oct 1999 11:26:02 +0200 Date: Fri, 8 Oct 1999 11:26:02 +0200 From: H.K.J. It said GDP prices rose to 2.695 bln rials ( $7 bln), without taking into account inflation, up from 2.669 bln rials ( $6.9 bln) in the first half of last year. The oil sector's contribution rose by 4.8 percent to 874.4 bln rials ($2.2 bln). In 1998, as world oil prices collapsed, Oman's GDP fell more than 10 percent to 5.457 bln rials ( $14.1 bln). Oil accounts for around 30 percent of GDP and 75 percent of the state budget. I've just finished a book on the political economy of Basra's trade during the eighteenth century and am now planning a second book on Oman's commercial empire during the early modern period. I'm sure I'll narrow or better define my work after I start looking at the available sources but the above topic is a starting point. I am planning to visit Oman this summer to see what sources are available and generally to get a good sense of what I can and cannot do. I will then come for a longer visit to start the work in earnest. I would really appreciate any and all types of information on available sources in Oman, the archives there, the conditions for researchers, accommodation, government regulations, contacts, etc. etc. In short, anything that you think could help me get started would be most appreciated. I also wonder if any of you might know Mr. Joachim Duester's email. I wrote to him via the Oman Studies Centre but received no answer. I'm also interested in becoming affiliated with this Centre, but again, my messages to them probably did not get through so if anyone knows of an email address for the Centre please do pass it to me. Many thanks for your help. Joachim Duester, Oman Studies Centre "I am trying to understand section 3.3.1 on Omani urban and rural population by place of enumeration vs. place of usual residence. Under the category "Place of usual Residence" after the list of the regions, there is "Bedouin settlement/camp" -- does this mean that these camps are not a part of the regions or that they move over the borders of regions? However, under the list of "place of enumeration" there is no place of "Bedouin camp" -- does that mean that these camps are simply considered part of the "rural" (reef=peasant) population of the regions? Finally, do you know why there was no attempt to figure out occupation vis-a-vis the rural/urban distinction that is used in the census?"
