His Majesty Sultan Qaboos is being represented at the Organization of the
Islamic Conference summit by His Highness Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmoud al Said,
Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers. The Sultanate and other
Arab/Islamic states are deeply shocked by the high level of Israeli brutal
behaviour against the Palestinians, which has been confirmed by latest
reports by Amnesty International and UN Commission for Human rights. It is
feared that Israeli current policies will only lead to escalating violence
and instability in the Middle East and would only provoke hatred and
frustration in the region.
According to GulfWire, the 9TH summit of the Organization of the Islamic
Conference
opened in Doha, Qatar on November 12 following a pre-summit meeting of
foreign ministers. The ministerial meeting produced a draft communiqué
focusing on the conflict in the Palestinian territories, which has resulted
in the deaths of over 200, mostly Palestinians. According to BBC News on
November 12 the resolution contained the following points: Muslim states
are urged to cut ties to Israel; an international tribunal is proposed to
judge alleged Israeli war criminals; Muslim states are to recognize an
independent Palestinian state once declared; and Muslim states are to
support the case for a United Nations protection force for Palestinians.
The run up to the summit was marred by threats of boycotts by some OIC
members over Doha's hosting an Israeli trade office. Qatar, the 9th
triennial summit's host and incoming chair of the OIC, announced it closed
the office on November 9. Meanwhile, Bahrain's Emir said he would not
attend the summit because of the unresolved territorial dispute between
Manama and Doha.
The OIC summit, which runs through November 14, when first planned was to
address a broad range of issues important to the 56 Islamic country members.
However, events of the last two months in the Palestinian territories have
put the breakdown of the peace process and violent clashes there to the
forefront of the summit's agenda.
On November 12 Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Abdullah called for "deeds not
words" in support of Palestinians and said the U.S. bore special
responsibility for the peace process collapse according to Arabia Online.
He said, "The fate of Jerusalem is in our trust... What we need are deeds
and not words, and let us stay away from useless formulae because what is
happening to Jerusalem is an Islamic affair as well as an Arab one."
In an apparent reference to U.S. President Bill Clinton's comments in
September about reviewing the case for relocating the U.S. embassy from Tel
Aviv to Jerusalem, Crown Prince Abdullah said, "The conference must affirm
cutting diplomatic relations with any country that moves its embassy to
occupied Jerusalem."
