Dear colleague, dear friend

This is not only to keep you informed about the project on "Elite Change in
the Arab World" we are launching here at the Middle East Programme of
SWP, but also to tell you that there is still one scholarship available for
a promising junior researcher of Arab nationality (doctoral candidate or
post-doc) to join us in the project. You might want to pass this message
around to people you think would fit into the programme. Potential
candidates should contact us rather quickly; applications will pass trough
our search committee as they come in.

The research project will deal with several key questions, such as the new
structure and composition of the emerging elites in the Arab states, and
the inter-relations of the formation of these elites on the one hand, and
political, socio-economic transformation on the other. That is, it will not
so much focus on the prime decision-makers as rather on the broader
political and economic elites of the Arab countries. It will also try to
examine how these impending domestic changes are to effect the regional and
international relations of Arab states.

The project will stress a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, and
come up with several case studies and one cover study. The project is
located at SWP in Berlin. At present, we have the funds to extend six
scholarships, equally divided between junior researchers from Europe and
from the Arab world (one of the scholarships for candidates with Arab
nationality is still to be assigned). Scholarship holders are supposed to
be with SWP for the time they participate in the project except for shorter
research trips to the countries in question. Stipends are available for an
initial two-year period (starting from January 2001). The working language
is English; German is not required.

For those of you who are interested to learn more about the project, please

Sincerely,
Volker Perthes
