I have beeen researching the monetary changeover in 1970 and the monetary 
changes particularly during the Muscat Currency Authority and the Oman 
Currency Board periods.I have not finished the work yet but certinly have 
enough of a story for a symposia.

The intriguing story about the monetary system introduced in 1970 was that 
it was the only time that I have discovered that the central banking 
functions were carried out by a private institution (British Bank of the 
Middle East-now HSBC).

A search on the web gives about three (yes only three)references to Sultan 
Said and to my mind it is a subject screaming out for more 
research,particularly as mentioned by Joachim when some of the people who 
would have a story to tell are still alive !!.

Any more references greatly appreciated
