Although Jabal Shams is the common name on the maps, there is an 
academic controversy about that. It seems the correct name should be 
Shaam (or something like that, with a long "a".

This is summarized in a well informed paper by D. Insall: "The re-naming 
of Oman's Highest Mountain" that appeared in Journal of Oman Studies 11, 
2000, p. 111-119, with a lot of relevant information.
