I drove from England to Oman in 1973 across Europe, Turkey and Iran down to
the port of Bandar Abbas. From there I took a dhow across the Gulf to Ras
Al-Khaimah (it was due to go to Dubai but was driven off course by a storm)
and continued across the desert (now there is a road) to Oman. There are
still plenty of craft crossing the Gulf from Bandar Abbas to the UAE and it
should be possible to make an arrangement locally.
